Back To The Future
Apart from that great Emma Stone cover, another good reason for buying the September 2012 edition of Interview magazine this month is this ‘Back To The Future’ fashion editorial by Mert & Marcus. Looking like outtakes from Barbarella, the Styling is by Karl Templer. Models: Frida Gustavsson & Nimue Smit.

29 Minutes
On Thursday afternoon I took a little stroll to the High-Rise hang-out of Manko and Atomic to do a test shoot for a forthcoming collaboration with Manko. The nature of the test was to see what kind of results we'd achieve with film that's been hibernating in my refrigerator for the past 20 years. Because of the random nature of the film, I shot with both analog and digital just in case the film produced blanks. These are the digital results.
As much as I love my digital camera, the reassuring sound of the shutter of my trusty old 35mm Nikon FM was something I hadn't heard for a good many years and I realised then, just how much I'd missed it. Manko gave herself an immaculate make-up job as usual and Jason entrusted us with one of his vintage comics for a prop. As pleased as we were with the digital shots there was something quite appealing about the film results. 118 shots were taken within a 29 minute time-frame and the image below is our favourite from the expired film. More experiments to follow...

Groovy Images From The Sixties #11

Above: a classic poster designed by Alan Aldridge who was one of the most important graphic designers of the 1960's and helped create the graphic style of that era. This poster for Andy Warhol’s avant-garde Chelsea Girls was one of his most famous designs, winning a Silver Award from The Design and Art Director's Club, though it also earned him a warrant for arrest under the pornography laws of the time and he had to go into hiding until his lawyer got the charges dropped. Aldridge also created the artwork for one of my favourite albums, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy by Elton John in 1975.

Penguintronica
My friendly neighbourhood neighbour, broadcaster and DJ, Ben Eshmade sent me the link to one of his eclectic mixes and I've been enjoying listening to it while I work, maybe you'd like to listen too. This is what he says:
"Like most people I’ve spent a very long time ripping audio from compact discs on to my computer over the last few decades. I was fortunate in 2002 to start the Chiller Cabinet radio programme on Classic FM (now on Chill) and with this came access to an Aladdin’s Cave of music. The trouble being honest is that with this and now with my Arctic Circle Radio shows (Arctic Circle Radio and on Chill/Resonance FM/Itunes) I don’t listen to everything I get sent in great detail.

So I’ve come up with the Penguin Shuffle using my media player to generate giant random playlists from the 269 Gigs of mp3 audio. This I carefully reduce down and re-arrange to create a new and interesting hour long musical journey. This can really generate some interesting results bringing along artists I would not normally put together or digging up gems of tracks that I never knew I had."

Barbi Doll
The first I knew of Barbi Benton was when I saw her starring as a country singer in a tv cop show called McCloud. I watched the show when I was in Canada in 1976 and subsequently bought the album from a store in Toronto. I didn't know about the Playboy connection at the time, or the fact that she was Hugh Hefner's main squeeze and I remember feeling slightly bemused by what she was wearing on the back cover of the album sleeve. Now of course it all makes total sense. I still have the album and here it is. Check the 70's logo on her T... (click for large)

Rendered Speechless...
I saw one of these renders on the web a few weeks ago and a bit of online research took me to the Redsteam Creative Studio's website. The team member responsible for this incredible 3d modelling and rendering of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, is Uri So from South Korea who lives in Singapore and has been working as a 3d character artist since 2005. You can find more of her work on her blogspot here.

Re: Pussy Riot
"I protest the conviction and sentencing of Pussy Riot to a penal colony for two years for a 40 second performance extolling their political opinions. Even if one disagrees with the location or how they chose to express themselves, the sentence is too harsh and in fact is inhumane. I call on all those who love freedom to condemn this unjust punishment. I urge artists around the world to speak up in protest against this travesty. They've spent enough time in jail. I call on ALL of Russia to let Pussy Riot go free." Madonna
Not the only injustice in the world, but still a pretty ridiculous situation to find yourself in for a bit of artistic/political expression. Friends of 'Oranges', Manko & Jason Atomic have attended every protest from the start, in fact Manko found herself in this morning's edition of The Times. For the facts... http://freepussyriot.org/
